Third-seeded Prerna Bhambri of India made a shock first-round exit, losing to compatriot Nehel Sahni 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 on the opening day of the $10,000 ITF women's tournament at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association stadium on Monday.

Prerna hasn’t fully recovered from her shoulder injury and it affected her game. There was no such threat for second seed Rishika Sunkara who sailed into the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Manya Nagpal.

Also progressing were fourth seed Nidhi Chilumula, who defeated Damini Sharma 6-1, 6-1 and Bhuvana Kalva, who got the better of Nishitha Dudeja 6-1, 6-0.

Top seed Ankita Raina will open her campaign against Sanya Madan on Tuesday. Anikta has been in good form and won her second ITF tournament in the Capital earlier this month, but exited from the first round of $25, 000 event in Istanbul last week. Runner-up from the Delhi ITF, Eetee Maheta has been seeded sixth and will take on wild card Arushi Bhasin.

Results (first round): Nehel Sahni bt Prerna Bhambri (3) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Rishika Sunkara (2) bt Manya Nagpal 6-3, 6-1; Nidhi Chilumula (4) bt Damini Sharma 6-1, 6-1; Bhuvana Kalva bt Nishitha Dudeja 6-1, 6-0.
