Nun gang-raped in Odisha, 2 arrested

Bhubaneswar, July 15, 2013, DHNS;

The police in Odisha’s Kandhamal district have arrested two youths for allegedly raping a young nun. One of the accused is reportedly a first cousin of the victim. Another suspect is absconding.

“We have already arrested two accused in the case on the basis of the victim’s statement. Medical examination of the accused and the victim has been done. A third accused is absconding. We are trying to nab him. A detailed investigation is on,” said a senior police officer.

According to a complaint filed by the nun in the Bramhanigaon police station, she was on a training programme in Chennai when her first cousin and his two friends asked her to return home immediately, citing her mother’s poor health.

She took a train to Berhampur in the neighbouring Ganjam district. She was kidnapped from the station on July 5 by the three men.
The trio raped her repeatedly at various places in Ganjam and Gajapati districts till July 11. She managed to escape on July 13 and filed a police complaint on reaching her village.
