A construction worker was killed and two others sustained minor injuries when a compound wall of a plot collapsed on them at Lakshmanmurthy Nagar here on Friday.

The victim is identified as Venkataswamy, 60, from Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh. His family had come to the City a fortnight ago in search of a job and he got the job with a civil contractor.

Following the residents’ memorandum submitted to a local MLA, the Palike had taken up the asphaltation of Gandhiji Road and awarded the project to a civil contractor. Venkataswamy was among the four workers deployed by the contractor to clean the drains on either side of the road.

The dilapidated compound wall of a plot adjacent to the drain collapsed when the four were busy cleaning the drain.

Shekhar, a fish vendor near the site, said he heard some people warning the workers that the wall was unstable and may collapse on them.

“I saw two men cleaning the drain. When the wall collapsed, the younger managed to jump out of the gutter, but the aged man could not,” he said.

Venkataswamy was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was declared brought dead. Ramamurthy Nagar police have registered a case.
