9 newborns in Odisha die within 24 hours
The Odisha government on Saturday ordered a detailed inquiry into the death of nine newborns in Vir Surendra Sai (VSS) Medical College and Hospital at Burla in Sambalpur district within 24 hours. The cause is yet to be ascertained.
VSS is the biggest government-run health facility in western Odisha.
State Health Secretary Pradipta Mohapatra said: “We have already directed a two-member expert team to rush to Burla and ascertain the exact cause. They have been asked to file a detailed report as early as possible. If negligence is found, stringent action will be taken against those responsible.”
Tension prevailed in the medical college hospital on Saturday as parents and relatives demanded an explanation from hospital authorities. They were joined in by the locals.
Alleging negligence on part of the doctors and other staff, the angry mob demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident and filing of criminal charges against them.
They also demanded compensation from the government.
The incident took place in the special newborn care unit of the premier government run health centre.
The health secretary said that in their preliminary report, hospital authorities had attributed the deaths to various reasons. “We are waiting for the detailed report by the expert team and action will follow very shortly,” Mohapatra added.
