In a bid escape from Tihar jail, a 35-year-old prisoner died on Tuesday when he tried to board a truck coming out of the prison, said jail officials.

According to the Tihar officials, the victim has been identified as Pappu alias Mehtab, an
alleged drug addict who stays at the basement of Hanuman Mandir at Connaught Place.

“On July 18, Pappu was sent to in sub-jail number 1 in connection with his involvement in a theft case. Being a drug addict, he was referred to drug de-addiction centre a day later. On 22 July, he was again sent back to the sub-jail 1 where he was lodged.”

On 23 July, at around 10 am, Mehtab was being taken to hospital inside the jail premises. While he was walking down to the hospital, he noticed a truck hired by a city’s Public Works Department contractor was going out after unloading some construction materials in the jail premises.

The truck was heading towards the gate and was about 200 yards behind the gate. He ran after the moving truck to escape from the prison and got hold of the back side of the truck.
“While he was trying to climb on the truck, he fell down and suffered serious head injuries,” said  south Asia’s largest prison Tihar Jail’s spokesperson Sunil Gupta.

Pappu was immediately taken to jail hospital and from there he was referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Hari Nagar. The doctors declared him brought dead.

The dead body has been preserved at the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem and his family members have been informed.

“The post-mortem of his body will be conducted after a Metropolitan Magistrate starts an inquiry into the incident. All incidents that occur in Tihar Prisons and involve the death of an inmate are investigated by a magistrate,” said Gupta.
