Appanna leaves Goa in a tailspin

KSCA XI march towards commanding victory

KP Appanna of KSCA XI spun visitors Goa into a web on the third day of their Safi Darashah Trophy tournament match at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Thursday.

Goa, overnight 153/4, succumbed to the spin of Appanna to be bowled out for 304 in 86.3 overs – the left-arm spinner accounting for five of the remaining six wickets to fall in the Goa first innings on the day.

Hosts’ skipper CM Gautam enforced the follow-on and it was again Appanna, who did the bulk of damage with figures of 3/43 in 17 overs, putting KSCA XI on the verge of their first outright victory in the tournament. They drew their first match against Jharkhand.

Goa, when stumps were drawn for the day, were precariously placed at 147/6 with Ravikant Shukla, the only one offering some resistance, batting on 75 (121b, 9x4). Goa are still adrift of 76 runs with just four wickets in hand.

Things did not begin well for Goa in the second innings as captain Swapnil Asnodkar departed without opening his account when he was caught and bowled by Abhimanyu Mithun.

Keenan Vaz, who struck an aggressive 66 (111b, 11x4) in the first innings, was promoted to one-drop but Sharath HS induced a nick that was held by the ’keeper Gautam.  Shukla, who was coming off the back of a fine knock in the first innings, joined hands with Balekar and immediately set about his job in a commanding manner.

A glance to fine-leg was followed by a flick through mid-wicket before a drive straight down the wicket saw the southpaw stamp his class.

Balekar was keeping him the good company but Appanna struck as he caught Balekar in front of the stumps.

Rohit Asnodkar, Darshan Misal and Amogh Desai all came and left over the course of next 12.3 overs as Appanna reduced Goa from 92/2 to 127/6 before Shukla and Amit Yadav ensured that Goa would at least take the match into the last day.
Earlier, Appanna, who had a modest Ranji campaign taking just 18 wickets from eight games, ran through the Goan lower-order that which enabled KSCA XI to ask their rivals to bat again.

He trapped the duo of Vaz and Harshad Gadekar in front, castled a well-set Misal for 61 (146b, 6x4, 1x6), gleefully took the return catch that Yadav offered before accounting for Buddhadev Mangaldas to complete a five-wicket haul inside a session.
