Rusty ITI thump HMT
Bangalore, DHNS:

ITI, led by a spirited effort from spiker Shreesha, posted a 25-22, 25-20, 30-28 win over a resilient HMT in the State Senior ‘A’ division volleyball league tournament here at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday.

Brute force: ITI’s Sharadh Shetty smashes even as HMT’s Sunil goes for a block in the ‘A’ division volleyball tournament in Bangalore on Saturday. DH photoWith this win, ITI improved their chances of qualifying to the Super League from Pool B with Karnataka State Police (10) already in the clear. ITI have eight points as against BSNL’s six and JSW’s  seven as on Saturday. JSW’s match against BSNL, which will decide who qualifies, was called off due to bad light and will be played on Sunday at 8.00 am.

If JSW win, they will have nine points and move to next stage. If BSNL win they will be tied with ITI, and JSW at eight points bringing the calculator into the equation to decide the qualifier.

In Pool ‘A’ MEG (8) and Postal (7) moved to the Super League.

Railways, who had already qualified with nine points, pulled out of the tournament due to their inter-Railway matches.

And by virtue of being the third best-placed team, Postal earned their berth. Earlier, ITI, who had a 15-3 lead, warded off a comeback from HMT, who brogut the score to 19-17, to win the first set.

Ravindra and National spiker Vikram gave ITI the edge in the second set but HMT riding on Rajashekar and Punith Kumar fought hard before ITI took a 2-0 lead.

HMT took a 17-11 lead in the third set but ITI rallied well to complete the formalities.
Earlier, CIL’s match against BEL was called off due to rain and will be played on Monday.
