Muslim intelligentsia distances itself from fatwa
Lucknow, Nov 8 (PTI)

Distancing itself from the 'fatwa' against Muslims singing 'Vande Mataram', a section of the intelligentsia on Sunday said there was a need to educate the community about the actual meaning of the lone ''objectionable'' word 'vande' in order to remove doubts over its rendition.

Last week, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind at its annual meet in Deoband opposed singing of the national song by Muslims.

Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and eminent scholar Maulana Kalbe Sadiq called for a debate among Hindi litterateurs to define the word 'Vande' used in the song which forms the basis on which it has been termed been as being against their religion.

Sadiq said that he was ready to accept the contention of Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khursheed that the National Song had been approved by Maulana Azad on whose suggestions some words were removed.

"If the word Vande stands for respect and showing reverence to the motherland, then Muslims have no ground to object to it and it is for the litterateurs and knowledge persons of Sanskrit, Urdu and Hindi to sit down and debate over it so that the misconceptions about the same can be removed," Sadiq said.

He stressed that if the word stands for "worship" it is technically unacceptable for Muslims who cannot worship anyone other than the almighty.

Sadiq said there were important issues like illiteracy, unemployment and poverty which need to be taken up by everyone, including the ulemas.

Echoing similar views, president of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, Maulana Mirza Mohammad Athar also questioned the timing of the fatwa which he claimed could ignite communal passions.

"It is time that experts of Hindi and Sanskrit determine whether the word in question is 'Vande' or 'Bande'," Maulana Athar said, adding that perhaps it is the former which means showing respect and it is in keeping with the tenets of Islam.

"It needs to be told to the Muslims that vande is other than worshipping the motherland as they have been made to believe all these years," Maulana Athar said.

Chairperson of All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board Shaista Amber alleged the issue has provided fodder to communal and reactionary forces who are out to use it to bash the community.

"The National Song is in the praise of the motherland and all muslims love their country and those who are attaching its rendition to patriotism are on the wrong path," she said questioning whether all those who sing it are patriots and had never done anything wrong.

"Muslims should also not react to forces who aim at their loyalty to the country as they do not require any certificate from anyone," Amber said recalling as to how the same Deoband and Imarate Shariat in Bihar had issued a fatwa for independence of the country.

Maulana Abdul Kayoon, adviser to the Muslim Women Law Board also called for not paying importance to issues which could create chasm in society.

Sadiq said the community should rather focus to redress the problems faced by it.

"Reciting a word or not is not as important as these major issues which could bring them in the mainstream of development," Sadiq said, adding on a personal basis he was ready to recite or read any thing if the community's welfare can be achieved.

I think Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and eminent scholar Kalbe Sadiq has the guts to challenge the verdict on literal ground rather than on communal basis. His advice should be adhered and linguistic scholars should sit and clarify the meaning of Vande. Vande Matram is a national song and if one world hurts the sentiments of 20% Muslim population of India then this world could be modified with another word instead of threatening your own 20% population. I have seen certain comments as very racial and communal, I request them to moderate their comments and talk of a solution rather than pollution of Indian minds. I also negate the comment of one who labels Kalbe Sadiq as Shia. So what, he is a Muslim and given a very scholastic opinion. Develop a sense of unity among Muslims of all Fiqh and work for the unity of India by talking on the table rather than bashing each and other.

Scholastic opinion??? having made a statement, now you want a debate on a word. then you will say Bharat is anti- islam, and so on. Saluting your country is a crime for you. in which world you live. without understanding the true preaching of Islam, you are perpetually creating nuisance in each and everything. Even crime and atrocities are justified in the name of religion. Have you ever bothered to respect others. Only words you guys understand are fatwas, taliban, jihad etc. ARE THEY TRUE ISLAM?

What do u mean by " you guys understand only fatwas, taliban, jihad etc." First let me clear u that fatwa means a dictate as in any religion or body or org. Talib means student and Jihad means fighting to save the life or property or honor of one self or close relatives or neighbours (irrespective of their religion)But if some body keeps Murthy as his name and does all sorts of misdeeds and if some Tom says All Murthis should be banished from my motherland etc., what would be your reaction? Try to understand the basics of communal harmony, its just not enough to acquire a doctorate with out strong morals.

I am an Indian Muslim living in Dubai to improve personal financial conditions. My fellow Indians, our spirit should be as an Indian first, each one of us follow our own religion. Islam is a peace loving religion, Muslims love to live in peace, but some illiterate Muslim leaders who wants to be in centre of attraction say things which make all Indian Muslims leave in difficult times. Fatwas should be issued on important issues to modify things to make life easier for living not for creating hatred. Such nonsense fatwas should be ignored and continue to live as usual. There are many things in the world of non-Muslims which are not accepted in Islam, but we are living with compromises, that is life, everyone does that not only Muslims. Let us forget all non-sense issues and live peacefully and UNITED to resolve and work on more important issues like building united society and concentrate on constructive works and thoughts. I live in UAE, it is Muslim country, where large number of expatriates are non-Muslims, and among INDIANS more than 50% are non-Muslims, all are living happy and nice without differences. It is the leaders and the leaders in governments who cultures unity.

Views come from the a shite person who do not accept deoband anyways. It does not matter. The majority of muslims will continue to follow Deoband in matters of religion. We know they make the right decisions for the community and we will continue to respect them for that. For a muslim unity of our creator and non-association of partners with our creation and sustainer is the most important aspect and there shall be no compromise on that matter. It is and shall be central aspect of every muslims life. A muslims life centers around the concept of "Ahad" - one God, and other folks should not have objection to that as its a matter of personal faith.

Dear readers and viewvers There fatwa on the singing of Onde mataram by muslim is un Islamic, we welcome it but on the same i urge the Ulemas to be more realistic, and just why did they wait so long to issue fatwa, why did they dint given fatwa on signng and praying in missionary schools, many prominent islamic scholars childrens were studying in their schools, wearing skits and ties, why dint they give fatwa on Smoking of Cigarates, hukkas, chewing of pan, panmasala , inter relegious marrage of muslim girls and boys and practicing both relegions etc., why did they call them selfs as deobandis and baralvis, shia or sunni, wahabi when islam is one relegion ulemas to focus justifiable verdicts and co existence, they dint done nothing to reconstruct Babri masjid know they as singing some thing else, i wel come the fatwa but they have to think on theirs too as govt schools forced to sing this song, suryanamaskar, prayer before meal have to strongly protested and protection of muslim dignity and integrity and unity should be given prominence, welfare, health etc.
