Last Updated 06 August 2013, 20:02 IST

In a setback to Gujarat Additional Director General of Police P P Pandey, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday rejected his plea for anticipatory bail.

Pandey, one of the accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, is now expecting arrest. However, he has moved the Gujarat High Court, which would hear his petition on Wednesday. Pandey went absconding after the central agency summoned him for questioning and surfaced only after the Supreme Court asked him to present himself before the CBI court in Ahmedabad.

Pandey was also declared an absconder and was named as an accused in the preliminary charge sheet filed by the CBI in this case along with other police officials.

Pandey’s lawyer Nirupam Nanavati said that the central agency had been hounding Pandey and wants to jail him at any cost.

However, CBI lawyer Ejaz Khan refuted the charge and said the agency had been brought into investigate the case by the high court. He also said Pandey has been knocking all doors to get the FIR against him quashed.
