Delhi, being the capital of India, has been the prime target of many terror groups. Despite efforts by security forces and law enforcement agencies to prevent attacks, terror groups have managed to penetrate the security blanket from time to time to plant bombs or shoot people. The following are some major terror related incidents reported from Delhi.

.
* 2012 attack on Israeli diplomat: The attack occurred on February 13, 2012, after a bomb explosion on an Israeli diplomat’s car in Chanakyapuri. A motorcyclist attached a sticky bomb to the car of the wife of an Israeli defence attache to India while she was on her way to pick up her children from school. The woman, Tal Yehoshua Koren, sustained moderate injuries that required surgery to remove shrapnel.

* 2011 High Court bombing: The bombing took place on September 7, 2011, outside gate number five of the Delhi High Court where a suspected briefcase bomb was planted. It killed 12 people and injured 76. Two kilos of explosives were used with ammonium nitrate and PETN to cause considerable damage even though used in a small amount. Previously, a low-intensity blast also occurred at the court outside gate number seven on May 25 with no reported casualties.

* 2010 Jama Masjid attack: The attack occurred on September 19, 2010, when two gunmen on a motorcycle fired at a tourist bus near gate number three of Jama Masjid and injured two Taiwanese tourists. About three hours later, a car parked approximately 150 metres from the spot caught fire, apparently due to a minor blast.

* September 27, 2008 blast: The explosion occurred in Mehrauli’s flower market, which left three persons dead and 23 injured. Witnesses reported that it took place after two men on a motorcycle and wearing helmets dropped a tiffin box in which the bomb was placed. A boy picked up the box in an attempt to return it to the bikers, but they refused and fled. People saw smoke coming out of the box and asked the boy to get away, but it was too late.

* September 13, 2008 bombings: The bombings were a series of five synchronised blasts that took place within a span of a few minutes at various locations. At least 30 people were killed and over 100 were injured, while four bombs were defused. Indian Mujahideen sent an e-mail to TV channels informing them of the blasts just after the first one occurred.

* 2005 bombings: Three explosions went off on October 2005, which killed more than 60 people and injured at least 200 others. The high number of casualties made the bombings the deadliest attack in India in 2005. The bombings came only two days before Diwali, and investigators believed Lashkar-e-Toiba was behind the attacks

* 2001 attack on Parliament: Terrorists on December 13, 2001, attacked Parliament resulting in a 45-minute-long gun battle in which nine policemen and Parliament staff were killed. All five terrorists were also killed by security forces and were identified as Pakistani nationals. The attack took place minutes after both Houses of Parliament had adjourned for the day. The suspected terrorists dressed in commando fatigues entered Parliament in a car through the VIP gate of the building.

* 2000 attack on Red Fort: The attack was carried out by Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Toiba on December 22, 2000, which killed two soldiers and a civilian at the national monument.
