Stories for the soul

It’s celebration time at Jyoti Nivas College with a unique and interesting new club having been launched recently.

The inauguration of the storytelling club named Doom Shewa, which is Tibetan for storytelling, was an initiative by the second-year BA Communicative English, Optional English and Psychology (CEOEP) class of the college. With visible enthusiasm, the students held the first session of the club.

The event kicked off with an introduction using famous lines from well-known stories like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Lion King’.

Following this, three stories were performed and narrated. The first was a Kannada folk tale presented in the traditional manner.

Another story that was performed started with a folk song and told the story through the format of a popular game called ‘Chinese Whisper’.  The third story was inspired from a Japanese folk tale of eternal love.

“I thought it was extremely vibrant and I loved the stories that were narrated. Every story had something to look forward to. The way the students narrated and enacted these stories made it very interesting to watch,” said Rochelle Maryann Stephens, president of the student union, who is also a part of the CE department.

“The idea of starting a club for storytelling is a really nice idea. Their efforts paid off and they put up a very good show,” she adds.

Eashita Maheshwari, a member of the club, says, “Though the club has been started by the second-year CE students, they have left the platform open to all the other batches and departments. Everybody who has a story to share can come and narrate it.”

Naureen Aziz, head of the CE department, was proud of the students for taking up this initiative. “Storytelling has been a part of our syllabus since 2005. Everyone has a story to tell and so, we decided to extend this art to all students of other combinations as well. This is the first time that the department has started a storytelling club with the intention of bringing together people of different cultures to one platform,” she says.
