The goof-up that cost students dearly

Last Updated 26 August 2013, 21:27 IST

The admissions for psychology courses went awry as a result of misunderstanding of the process on the part of the department officials.

The departments are required to fill the General Merit (GM) quota first and then proceed to the reserved category seats.

The first 15 or 20 ranks (depending on the stipulated number) will be assigned to the GM category. If there are any students from any of the reserved categories in these top few ranks assigned for GM, the department is required to allot the reserved category students seats under General Merit. Confusion reigned as the department staff allotted the GM seats (of reserved category students) under the reservation quota.

Students complained that those with lower ranks were admitted ahead of them and they were losing out on their share of seats.

Autonomous colleges

Seats from some of the colleges listed in the prospectus were suddenly taken off the
seat pool stating their recently gained autonomous status.

Students who had come hoping for a seat in these colleges were in for a rude shock as they were told that the seats did not exist. Psychology course in CMR College and Krishtu Jayanthi College were taken off the list. This led to a decrease of 20 seats (10 each). Students asked the officials why they listed those colleges in the prospectus when the university was not sure about their affiliation.

After an exchange of words for a couple of hours, it was finally decided that the university would undo the damage done on the first day.

The Vice-Chancellor, B Thimme Gowda, assured that any discrepancies in the admission process on the first day would be set right on Tuesday.

He asked students to maintain calm and said he was confident that they would appreciate the process on Tuesday.
