Chhattisgarh Deputy Speaker's brother, friends assault doctor
Korba, Aug 29, 2013 (PTI) 23:04 IST
A Government doctor was allegedly beaten up by the brother of Deputy Speaker of Chhattisgarh Assembly and his friends in Janjgir-Champa district over providing medical treatment to an injured BJP worker, police said today.
Angered over the August 25 incident in Champa town, which promoted the administration to order a probe and Chief Minister Raman Singh to assure appropriate action, doctors at Government hospitals in the district went on indefinite strike demanding arrest of the accused.
Doctors of Government District Hospital, Champa lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Shekhar Chandel and his associates thrashed a doctor - Pratap Singh Kurre - on late Sunday night, Janjgir-Champa Superintendent of Police Sheikh Arif Hussain told PTI.
"Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP), Champa Sadanand Kumar has been asked to probe the matter. Appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty," he said. Shekhar is the brother of Deputy Speaker Narayan Chandel, who is the BJP MLA from Janjgir-Champa constituency.
According to the police, on August 25 night, Shekhar along with BJP leaders and workers was putting up the party's posters and banners on Vivekanand Road in Champa ahead of Chief Minister Raman Singh's visit during 'Vikas Yatra'.
Meanwhile, a speeding car hit a few workers following which they were admitted at the district hospital. One of the injured, Devanand Yadav, was being treated by Kurre.
After giving preliminary treatment, Kurre was leaving to attend patients in women's ward, when he was stopped by Shekhar and his friends and told to concentrate on Yadav.
A verbal duel ensued and it soon escalated into a scuffle following which the doctor was badly thrashed by Shekhar and his aides, police said, quoting the complaint.
The incident was recorded on the hospital's CCTV camera which allegedly shows the ruling party MLA's kin and his supporters assaulting Kurre.
Yesterday, a group of doctors handed over a written complaint to the Chief Minister and police department, demanding action against the accused. A copy of the CCTV footage was also given to the police. However, so far no FIR has been registered against the accused, doctors said.
Talking to the media, Singh said suitable action will be taken in the case as early as possible.
