RSS meets to discuss PM candidate issue

Last Updated 07 September 2013, 20:16 IST

Top RSS leaders met on the eve of the crucial two-day coordination meeting with the BJP that may discuss the possibility of projecting Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 polls.

The sources said that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, senior colleagues Suresh Soni, Bhaiyyaji Joshi, Krishna Gopal, Manmohan Vaidya and Madan Das Devi held deliberations on the outcome of the meeting Bhagwat had with senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, L K Advani and Sushma Swaraj on projecting Modi as the poll mascot. Advani, Swaraj and Murli Manohar Joshi, who are not keen to see Modi as the prime ministerial candidate, have their reservations on the timing of the declaration.

While Singh, Arun Jaitley and a section of the RSS wants the declaration soon as they feel Modi is the party’s best bet, Advani and his camp is of the view that an early move will lead to polarisation which may not be in the interest of the National Democratic Alliance.

Sources said, this argument was also articulated by Madhya Pradesh (MP) Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan during a meeting with party leaders as well as with RSS functionaries.
