Bridge collapse hits traffic between Bellary, Hospet
Traffic between Bellary and Hospet was thrown out of gear following the collapse of a 50-year-old bridge across the Tungabhadra right bank canal on National Highway-63, near Toranagal in Sandur taluk of the district in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident occurred at 4.15 am when a lorry carrying heavy cargo passed through it. Eye-witnesses said it was fortunate that no casualties were reported. They recalled that a car had fallen into the canal last year, killing five people, as there is no protecting wall to the bridge between Toranagal and Kurekoppa villages. Local residents believe that the bridge may have weakened over time as heavy loads of iron ore, steel and heavy equipment meant for construction work of industries are often transported in lorries through this bridge in the recent years.
KSRTC buses and light vehicles plying between Bellary and Hospet are being diverted through an alternative route between Toranagal and Hospet via Kudathini, Daroji, Devalapura, Seetharam Thanda and Kamalapura.
Heavy vehicles are being routed via Toranagal, Vaddu, Basapura, Kakubalu and Byluvaddigeri to Hospet.
Sources in the Public Works Department said that the reconstruction of the bridge can be taken up only after December when the water level in the full-flowing canal starts receding.
