Student's death: principal submits
As tension mounted after a class V student's death allegedly due to her detention in a school toilet, the beleaguered principal handed over her "resignation letter" to the police in the presence of agitating guardians this evening.
DC (DD) of Barrackpore commissionerate Debasish Bez, who was present at the school premises, told the agitators that principal of Christ Church Girls school Helen Sarkar had handed over a paper to him, purported to be her resignation letter.
Refusing to accept the same as the resignation letter, the agitating guardians demanded that the principal should tender it on a school pad and it should be duly stamped.
Hundreds of guardians, holding the school authorities responsible for the death of Oindrila Das (11), also demanded immediate arrest of the principal.
The agitating guardians laid a siege to the main gate of the school, disallowing the principal and the teachers to leave the premises since morning.
A combat force of police personnel was posted in and outside the school premises hours after a section of guardians, joined by some locals, went on the rampage, breaking furniture, equipment and damaging school property in protest against Oindrila's death.
