A debt ridden 42-year-old businessman was arrested for kidnapping another businessman for a ransom of Rs 1 core from east Delhi’s Farsh Bazaar, police said.

The accused was nabbed after the kidnapper’s luck ran out as the victim managed to land on the floor and tapped it, which was heard by a neighbour, who in turn alerted police. The victim was rescued safely.

The accused has been identified as a factory owner, Dinesh Prasad, a resident of Vishwas Nagar. “He was arrested on Saturday,” said a senior police officer.

On September 13, police found that a 21-year-old boy of a business family was abducted and a ransom of Rs 1 crore was demanded. During investigation, police found that the kidnappers were using the mobile phone of the abducted person for making the ransom calls.

“We got information on Friday that a man has been kept as a hostage and tied up in Krishna Nagar. We rushed to the spot and found that the victim Alok Jain was kept there as a hostage,” said the officer.

Alok Jain told police that he runs his business of plastic pallets supply to factories. He has supplied raw material worth Rs 20 lakh to the accused Dinesh Prasad, who runs his factory of plastic coating to wires at Friends Colony.

The business Dinesh had slowed down and he ran into losses while Alok Jain pressed on to repay the debt. Then Dinesh sold his machines and repaid Rs 12.50 lakh to Alok Jain.

Dinesh was debt ridden and he was being asked by other lenders to repay their loan, so he planned to abduct Alok Jain. He called up Jain on September 13 and told him that he is about to get a payment of Rs 3 lakh at Krishna Nagar.

He convinced Jain to accompany him. They went to Krishna Nagar and in a flat. There Dinesh tied up Alok jain in a chair and gagged his mouth with a tie, and tapped his mouth.

After that, Dinesh locked the flat from outside. He then went out after taking the victim’s phone. He demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore from Alok Jain’s father, who finally negotiated the amount to Rs 50 lakh.

Somehow, the victim was rescued after he managed to fall on the floor and tapped it, which was heard by a neighbour, who alerted police. “The accused was arrested on Saturday,” said the officer.
