Puneeth, Radhika to raise awareness on RTE

Last Updated 20 September 2013, 17:23 IST

The Right To Education (RTE) Act has got a touch of glamour. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has roped in Kannada actors Puneeth Rajkumar and Radhika Pandit as brand ambassadors to raise awareness on the landmark legislation in the State.

The move comes after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently pulled up the State for poor implementation of the Act, citing media reports which suggested that nearly 37,000 RTE seats were lying vacant. RTE experts have pointed out that lack of awareness about the legislation was the main reason for its poor implementation.

The actors will work to inspire more students to enrol under RTE Act and popularise it among the public at large. Rajkumar said he was happy to be associated with the initiative.

“Education has the capacity to change people. But more awareness about the RTE Act is needed,” he told a press conference here on Friday. He also said he was glad to see the government engaged in educating people.

A series of promotional activities such TV and print advertisements featuring the actor will be carried out as part of the campaign.

“When we approached Puneeth about six months ago, he readily agreed to be a part of the RTE campaign for free,” said D Basavaraju, Director (Programmes), SSA. Pandit will also be part of the campaign.
