Last Updated 03 October 2013, 20:55 IST

BMTC on Thursday announced a 8 to 9 per cent hike in fare for its AC buses. While there is no rise for AC buses, including Vajra and Suvarna, upto six km, it will cost between Rs 5-10 beyond that distance. BMTC has, however, spared the 62 buses plying to Bengaluru International Airport.

In all, 663 buses come under the purview of hike, which, officials maintain has been effected due to increase in diesel price and dearness allowance for its employees. For Vajra buses, while there is no hike for stages 1, 2 and 16, the Rs 5 increase is for stages 3 to 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22 and 23. Similarly, Rs 10 increase is for stages 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 24 and 25. For AC Suvarna services, there is no change for stages 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9 but Rs 5 rise per stage in remaining stages. Also, rate of AC service day pass has been hiked by Rs 10.

According to General Manager Traffic Prakash G, for AC buses, while cost per kilometre worked out to be Rs 61, the earning was Rs 58. Also, owing to long pending demand for night buses from Electronic City to Hebbal, BMTC has begun services at 1.05 am, 1.50 am and 2.25 am on the route via BTM Layout.

From Vijayanagar to Electronic city, commuters will be able to cover the entire distance in 50 minutes plying on route number 600 V. The bus will start from Vijayanagar via Chandra Layout, Nayandahalli Junction, Hosakerehalli Nice Road Junction, Kanakapura Nice Road Junction, Gottigere Nice Road Junction and Electronic City. From Vijayanagar, it will start at 7:30 am, 8:30 am, 9 am and Electronic City from 5:30 pm, 6 pm, 6:30 pm and 7 pm. For those with monthly and daily passes they will have to pay Rs 30 each time they travel on AC buses.
