Kudroli temple to get women priests

Last Updated 03 October 2013, 20:24 IST

Former union minister B Janardhana Poojari has said that two women, who have lost their husbands, will be given an opportunity to worship the deities in Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheswara temple on the eve of Navaratri, by appointing them as priests of the temple.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Poojary said that the ‘revolutionary’ step is being taken to eliminate myths related to women who have lost their husbands, which prevents them from performing rituals in temples.

The move is also aimed at sending a positive message to society. The two women have been trained in the rituals for the last four months. They will offer pooja to the deities Lord Gokarnatheswara and Goddess Annapoorneshwari in Kudroli temple on October 6, by entering the sanctum sanctorums of the respective deities.

After the pooja of the main deity, the women will perform the installation of the idol of Lord Dattatreya under the ‘Ashwatha’ tree on the temple premises, Poojari said and added that the two women will also be appointed temple priests on the occasion.

The women will continue as the temple priests and get all the benefits applicable to male priests, he said.
