JOIN USDamini K Gowda set the first meet record of the State Senior Aquatic Championship as her fellow Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre swimmers dominated the second day’s proceedings here on Tuesday.
Teenager Damini erased the State record in the girls’ 200M individual medley with a commanding display after having triumphed in the 100-metre backstroke at the BAC.
She had a great opportunity to wrap up the day with three gold but fell short by 0.21 seconds in the 100M butterfly, settling for silver behind training partner Pooja R Alva (1:05.50).
In the girls’ 200M individual medley, Damini made a fine start, dashing off the blocks quickly to open up a half-a-second lead over Malavika V and Pooja R Alva.
After the backstroke leg, she extended that to a little more than a second before maintaining her healthy lead in the breaststroke stage.
She faced some tough competition from Malavika and Pooja in the freestyle leg, but powered home in fine fashion to pocket the gold in 2:29.14, obliterating Pooja’s 2009 record of 2:30.04.
Nettakallappa Aquatic Centre’s Malavika V won the silver with a timing of 2:30.7 while Pooja R Alva took home the bronze after touching the pad at 2:31.19.
Another BAC swimmer who sparkled was Arvind M. The 17-year-old bagged the gold in the 100M backstroke and the 200M individual medley, taking his yellow metal tally to four in this meet.
Shraddha Sudhir of Nettakallappa Aquatic Centre triumphed in the 200M breaststroke with a timing of 3:00.03. BAC’s Shriya R Bhat (3:01.85) finished second while Vaania Kapoor A, also from BAC, settled for bronze at 3:02.34.
BAC’s Rakshith U Shetty and GSC’s Deeksha Ramesh emerged as the fastest swimmers of the championship, winning the 50M freestyle events. Rakshith clocked 25.71 seconds, easily beating the competition from Dolphin’s Chethan B Aradhya 25.86 and Gaurav Yadav KA (26.67) of BAC.
Deeksha romped home in 28.23 while Malavika V came in second at 28.95 with Sneha T (29.11) finished third.
