Maya scraps ‘bhaichara’ committees

Lucknow, DHNS:

A day after sacking over 100 chairmen and vice-chairmen of various state-owned corporations, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday dissolved all the “bhaichara” (brotherhood) committees.

The decision comes in the wake of the poor showing of the party in the Lok Sabha elections in the state.
The bhaichara committees were set up with the objective of bringing the people of various castes together under the BSP fold to ensure the party’s victory.

Mayawati announced the decision while addressing a meeting of the BSP MPs, MLAs and other party functionaries here. She said the committees would be re-constituted soon to give better representation to all castes.

Apparently irked at the victory of her former principal secretary and congress nominee P L Punia in the reserved constituency of Barabanki, she said the Congress had fielded Punia to humiliate her.
“Once the Congress did the same thing to Dr Ambedkar by fielding a person who was his subordinate against him,” Mayawati said.
