State to launch weather-based crop insurance for three crops

The State government has introduced weather-based crop insurance scheme on a pilot basis for three horticulture crops - grapes, potato and mango.
This will come into effect from rabi season of the year 2009-10. The government has issued a notification in this regard.
The government has notified particular districts to be covered under the scheme. Those who grow grapes in Bangalore Rural, Bagalkot, Kolar, Bijapur, Chikkaballapur and Gulbarga districts are entitled to enjoy the benefits of the scheme.
Similarly those who grow potato in Bangalore Rural, Chikkaballapur, Kolar and those who grow mango in Bangalore Rural, Dharwad, Kolar, Tumkur and Chikkaballapur districts can also avail themselves of the benefit.
The insured amount will be equivalent to cultivation charges. Interested farmers can contact joint directors of Horticulture Department for details.
