Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as various PG Diplomas in Management (PGDBM) are two-year courses available to graduates from any stream with minimum 50% marks

Dear Sir,

I am a student in my final year of Mechanical Engineering. I want to do MBA. Which would be a good university to apply to? Also, which are the best colleges for an MBA in Karnataka?

Akaash Kulkarni

Dear Akaash,

Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as various PG Diplomas in Management (PGDBM) are two-year courses available to graduates from any stream with minimum 50% marks. While 75% of the curriculum is common, you could specialise in marketing, event management, advertising, finance, banking, international trade, systems, operations, human resources etc.  Certain institutes offer very specialised courses in management of rural business, pharmaceutical industries, family business etc.
Admission is through competitive exams such as CAT, MAT held thrice a year in December, February and May, K-MAT in Karnataka, and various individual tests conducted by autonomous universities.  Engineers do have an edge over others in these exams, particularly in quantitative and analytical questions.
If you are interested in any of the specialised fields, then you will have to apply to those specific institutions, otherwise you may prepare well from now itself by attending coaching classes if necessary.  There are many good B-schools, and you will have to eventually select one based on your merit ranking.

Dear Sir,

I have completed my BCom. I would like to pursue MBA through correspondence. Could you suggest a few universities that provide an MBA through correspondence course? When is the last date of admission? My specialisation in BCom was Marketing.

Syed Shujath

Dear Syed,

Regardless of the elective you took at the Bachelor’s course, take a decision on what career you would like to pursue.  Select your specialisation in MBA based on your interest and aptitude.  Most recognised open universities offer MBA for graduates from any stream. Admissions for academic year 2009 are still open in a few universities, which you may determine from their websites given below:

* Annamalai University    www.annamalaiuniversity.ac.in
* Indira Gandhi National Open University www.ignou.org
* NMIMS University    www.nmims.edu
* Bharathiar University    www.b-u.ac.in
* Alagappa University    www.aluniv.org
* Madurai Kamaraj University www.mkudde.org
* Karnataka State Open University    www.ksoumysore.com
