In a tragic incident just before the Deepavali festival, a mother of two children killed herself after hanging both her offspring due to financial and marital tensions.

Luckily, the younger of the two, four-and-a-half-year-old Pawan, survived as the noose tied around his neck loosened.

However, the child spent nearly 30 hours in the house with his dead mother and sister, before neighbours got wind of the incident and broke open the door.

Twenty-eight-year-old Rupa, hailing from Karekatte village of Nagamangala taluk, was found dead with her six-year-old daughter Lakshmi.

Police estimate that the act was committed on Thursday afternoon, but neighbours realised something was wrong and broke open the door only on Friday evening.

Rupa was married to Chennappa, who made a living by running two tempo travellers. According to Basaveshwaranagar police, the couple had moved to the city five years ago and were staying at Prem Nagar in Laggere.

The children were studying in Sacred Heart School at KG Layout in Laggere.

In the recent past, the relationship between husband and wife had soured with bitter fights over financial constraints.Chennappa was in heavy debt, and people who had lent him money began visiting his house to get their money back. This led to more fights between the couple.

When Chennappa started losing interest in his home, Rupa began to suspect that he was having an extramarital affair. She had to take up a job as a domestic help due to the financial situation at home, the police stated.

On Thursday, Chennappa left for Mysore and a creditor turned up Rupa’s door demanding money. Upset over this, Rupa decided to kill herself and the children. She took the children inside the room and tied three dupattas to the three blades of a ceiling fan. After hanging the children, she killed herself. But the noose around Pawan's neck eased, and he fell down while his mother and sister died. Pawan subsequently crawled towards the drawing room and lay there.

By Friday evening, neighbours who realised that no one had emerged from the house, went knocking on Rupa’s door. A bad smell emanating from the house alerted them, and they immediately broke open the door, and found Pawan lying on the floor.

When they woke him up and asked about his mother and sister, Pawan said they were both asleep in the next room. Neighbours were shocked to see that both mother and daughter were dead. They immediately informed the police.

Pawan was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, and is said to be out of danger.
The police found a two-page suicide note on the bed written by Rupa, which mentioned that she had decided to end all their lives over marital and financial issues.
