After moving the court in the wake of reports that women political undertrial prisoners were being assaulted by staff at Mumbai District Women’s Prison in Byculla, activists have decided to take up the issue with National Human Rights Commission , State Human Rights Commission  and National Commission for Women .

According to a statement issued by the Committee for the Protection of Democratic Rights (CPDR), the latest assault on women political prisoners by the jail staff is ' fourth such incident' and the attacks have taken place since the undertrials asked to implement the inmate rights in line with the prison manuals.

In the latest incident, Sushma Ramtekke, an undertrial political prisoner (granted bail), had objected to the assault on three Bengali speaking prisoners, including a pregnant woman.

Sushma, along with four other co-accused including Angela Sontakke, had been lodged in the Byculla Prison since 2011.
