Last Updated 17 November 2013, 20:38 IST

Hamsadhwani Creations conducted the annual music festival with vocal, solo violin, demonstration, musical feature, Lalitha Sahasranama, vocal ensemble (Goshti Gayana) and dance recitals.

R N Tyagarajan and R N Tharanathan, popularly known as the “Rudrapattana Brothers”, presented the inaugural concert of the “Hamsadwani Sangeethotsava - 2013.”

They were well supported by Nalina Mohan, H S Sudhindra and Giridhar Udupa, on violin, mridanga and ghata, respectively. Heirs to a great musical tradition, the brothers are known for dependable “Pattanthara”.

They opened the programme with a rare varna “Entha Prematho” in the raga Suruti. Suryakantha was the evocative raga for another infrequent krithi “Mudumomu”. The duo then chose raga Manirangu, an “appealing and emotive rakti raga” for a Swati Tirunal’s krithi “Jaya Padmanabha Sujesha”.

Then came Kalyani, the evergreen raga followed by “Thalli Ninu Nera Nammi”, a Shyama Sastry’s composition, in which they added lustre to their sangathies and nerval with evocative curves. It was followed by a brisk “Tani” by the seasoned percussionists. Nalina Mohan supported on violin with aplomb. Rudrapattana Brothers have rich concert experience and pleased the connoisseurs, sans flamboyance and showmanship.

Orphan girls’ talent to fore

“Seva Sadana”, House of Orphan Girls and Destitute Women, organised a cultural programme by its inmates, on the occasion of its Platinum Jubilee.

Dr Vyjayanthimala Bali, renowned artiste and former member of Parliament and Dr B Jayashree, prominent artiste and Member of Rajya Sabha, appreciated the services of Seva Sadana.

The inmates of the Seva Sadana presented music, dance and drama, which suited the occasion very well. Under the direction of Gayathri Keshav, they opened the programme with a beautiful lyrics of D R Bendre. 12 girls sang in unison “Jayadeva Jayadeva Sri Ganapathiraya” and “Hagalina Abbara Thannagayithu”. The “Kolata”, a popular folk dance of Karnataka, was performed by 8 girls with melodious music.

Kamsale, attributed to Male Mahadeswara, was performed to different permutation and combination of rhythmic cycles, with gay abandon and colourful dress, and was ably directed by Sujatha Venkatesh. The play “Chandramukhi” was the story of a stubborn princess, whose inflexibility was the cause of worry for the King!

Children performed with assurance and it was lively and enjoyable. It was ably directed by Dr S V Kashyap and Dr Brinda was the co-director. It was a very good effort to bring to light the hidden talent of the inmates.

Celebrating Kartheeka

The Kartheeka Maasa is celebrated by a number of cultural and religious institutions in the City. One such organisation “Nadajyothi Sri Tyagarajaswamy Bhajana Sabha”, on the occasion of “Kartheeka Sangeetha Shubha Sandhya”, had organised veena, flute, sugama sangeetha, apart from classical vocal concert, in collaboration with Malleswaram Arya Vyshya Sangha.

R A Dakshina Murthy, who gave a veena recital here on Thursday, belongs to that great lineage of Veena Subbanna’s “Sishya Parampara”. A disciple of veteran vainika H S Krishna Murthy, Dakshina Murthy has passed proficiency examination in Veena and also is an MTech degree holder. He has performed in many Sabhas for more than a decade. But it is surprising that he has not yet gone up the in the current concert.

Dakshina Murthy was supported by G S Nagaraj on mridanga and Dayananda Mohithe on ghata. After presenting a number of compositions in different ragas, Dakshina Murthy chose “Palinchu Kamakshee” for a detailed elaboration. A spacious alap and brisk thana, nerval and swara – were added, though did not rise to such heights.

Earlier, he also presented “Gangadhara Tripurahara,” a fine composition of Mysore Sadashiva Rao in the raga Purvi Kalyani. “Entha Muddo” is a composition with lilting melody and “Mamavathu Sri” is a popular krithi. Discretion in the selection of compositions is essential.

With some more concert experience and guidance, his Veena may become better impactful. But the sound of the mridanga was too loud, while the ghata was complementary. In total, Dakshina Murthy is certainly capable of rising higher to meet aesthetic elegance.

Sparkling vocal

Veena Seshanna’s Jayanthi (birth anniversary) was celebrated under the joint auspices of MES Kalavedi and Swaramurthy V N Rao Memorial Trust on Sunday.

Vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan belongs to a reputed family of musicians and is establishing very fast in the  field of music. “Vanajakshi”, the Mandari raga varna gave Gurucharan a bright start and the brief swara for “Sakethanagaranatha” was interesting.

He sang “Ubhaya Kaveri Ranga” of Veena Seshanna with a fine alapana and several lively phrases. “Karubaru” – another majestic krithi of Saint Tyagaraja was wholesome with alapana. The swara prasthara with Janti and different permutation and combinations, was sparkling.

With his melodious voice and appealing presentation, he satisfied both cognoscenti and lay listeners. H K Venkatram on violin, H S Sudhindra on mridanga and Sukanya Ramgopal on ghata gave good support on their respective instruments.
