Vidya, Varsha notch smooth victories

India’s Vidya Pillai, Varsha Sanjeev and Arantxa Sanchis scored contrasting victories in their respective group-stage matches of IBSF World Snooker Championship in Daugavpils, Latvia.

Veteran Vidya, the reigning National champion, defeated Australian Jessica Woods 3-1 (18-57, 61-15, 67-44, 50-39) to notch up her third straight win in Group to stay firmly on course for a last-24 berth.

Youngster Varsha blanked Poland’s Ewa Pawinska 3-0 (55-38, 56-43, 57-35) for her third consecutive win of Group F, while Arantxa grinded out a hard-fought 3-2 (52-39, 33-69, 51-72, 56-48, 62-36) win over Russia’s Dario Sirotina in Group E to maintain her unbeaten start as well.

In the men’s competition, Shahbaaz Adil Khan bettered his performance from previous two matches, blanking Jacobus Petrus Van Jaarsveld 4-0 while Brijesh Damani also recovered from Friday’s loss, crushing Ivan Kakovsky of Russia 4-0.
