SHGs to take care of garbage collections in State
Karnataka Government has entrusted the solid waste management in Municipalities across the state to Women self-help groups (SHGs).
A Government order has already been issued and the scheme would be monitored for a year, Minister for Municipal Administration Balachandra Jarkiholi told reporters. Municipalities would fix rate for garbage collection, transportation and disposal depending on the size of the wards and part of the income would go to Stree Shakti groups, he said.
The government has set a target of Rs 200 crore collection in property taxes in Municipal areas this year and till this September end Rs 91 crore has been achieved, he said. The next cabinet meeting would take a decision on the proposal to upgrade 52 Town Panchayats as City Municipal Councils. However, the proposal to convert about 400 Gram Panchayats (GPs) as Town Panchyats has been put on hold in view of the coming elections to GPs, he said.
