Report on status of City lakes soon

Last Updated 12 January 2014, 20:25 IST

A report on the condition of lakes in the City is being prepared by lake activists under the aegis of Save Bangalore Lake Trust.

Under the initiative, the volunteers will document the quality of water, the extent of encroachment on the lakes and other crucial information. The photographs of the lakes will also be taken for documentation. The data is being gathered from the local community and also through RTE queries.

The volunteers have so far collected information pertaining to 20 lakes including Varthur Lake, Bellandur Lake, Haralukuntekere and Narsipurakere. The initiative, which began last week, saw the participation of 30-40 lake teams and local residents.

According to Trust founder-member Balasubramanian Thirunavukkarasu, about six acre of land was found to be encroached upon at Hoskerehalli lake. Haralukuntekere was found to have been shrunk by two acres while the water in Varthur and Bellandur lakes was highly contaminated due to discharge of effluents and sewage from the nearby factories and apartments.

The report, once compiled, will be submitted to the State government and civic agencies such as Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and Bangalore Development Authority.

Lake activist Arbind Gupta said they will seek the help of Indian Institute of Science and Bangalore University to chalk out measures for rejuvenation of lakes.
