Brahma

“Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” This pithy counsel by Jesus holds apt for director Chandru, Uppi & Co, who unleash Brahma - The Leader on avowed audiences this week. God forbid, lest Lord Brahma himself does not descend on Gandhinagar to express his fury on them who have taken his title to foist such a febrile film.

It’s one racy, riotous, roller-coaster ride after credits trickle by, when Kannada cinema’s Real Star takes centre stage and Malaysia forms the celluloid mural for Uppi dada to go beserk as Brahma. R Chandru’s Brahma, unlike the divine protector, takes the avataar of the third Hindu Trinity – Maheshwara – the destroyer, swatting all and sundry as he goes on a looting spree, spiriting away a hidden cache of power and pelf-hungry politicans, gun-totting dons et al.

When our Super Star is not stealing and stashing riches at non-disclosed places, he is the epitome of a sane counsellor for the hardpressed on how to eke out a living and a messiah for the needy. Sure enough, falling hook, line and sinker for this art of humble, honest and high-thinking preacher is Kannada lassie who goes mushy and moony over this smooth talk. Even his wise words that he is not in love with her but on a mission falls on the deaf ears of the damsel. For, during a Best Couple Competition, our Brahma’s poetic expression of true love to impress judges is taken true by our smitten senorita.

From Malaysia, Mission Brahma heads to namma Bengaluru and Mysooru with Bangalore Palace and Lalit Mahal palaces forming the pivotal centre of palatial pastiche where his mustachioed papa rules the roost. However, our Brahma dons a real-life name, Upendra, to worm his way into the heart of his menacing, maniacal father.

Why has Brahma become Upendra? Why has his dad turned the demon he is? Where has all the money gone Upendra as Brahma looted like there is no tomorrow? Will the sabre-rattling ACP Bhairav Singh get to book the elusive Brahma? are posers the rest of the putrid plot answers. Suffice to say, this Brahma is best left to Uppi’s loyal legionnaires who have a whale of a time, cheering, showering coins and raising shindig, while others bemoan 151 minutes of bedlam they miserably bear.

Pranitha is a pretty presence, flitting eyelids and shaking a leg, swearing Brahma is her beau for life. As for comedy of Rangayana Raghu as Lucky Man, Sadhu Kokila, the less said the better.
