The seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, who were lodged in the Vellore prison, were happy when they heard the Tamil Nadu government's decision to free them in the next three days.

"We have formally informed to all the Rajiv Gandhi case convicts about the state government's decision. They were visibly happier today (on Wednesday) than yesterday and eagerly waiting for their release", a senior prison official said seeking anonymity.

According to the official, all the seven convicts including Nalini, who was lodged in special prison for women, will be released once the authorities get the order from the government.
"No major procedure is involved to release them. It is just a matter of formality. The wages for the work they did in the prison all these years will be paid cumulatively before the release,” the official pointed out.  "Their salaries are being settled on a monthly basis. Whatever is due, the balance amount will be paid to them when they are being released from prison'', he said, without quantifying it.

On the exact date of their release, the prison official said “we have to wait for three days for the Centre to respond to the State Cabinet's decision. If they did not respond, we have to get the State Government order for the same”. Cadres of various political parties thronged outside Vellore prison campus and distributed sweets and burnt crackers.

During her tenure in a prison, Nalini had completed her three-year-long Master’s in Computer Applications from IGNOU. In addition, she also finished certificate courses in food and nutrition in the same university.
