A 26-year-old tourist from Russia was killed and five others injured when the SUV they were travelling in was hit by a lorry coming from the opposite direction near Mugad village on the Dharwad-Goa Road on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Matilina, 26. Her husband Igor-Idrove, 32, Anatoly, 54, Maxim, 32, Valantina, 50, and Youlaka, 26, are injured.

Valentina and Youlaka who suffered serious head injuries have been admitted to the SDM Medical College Hospital in Dharwad, while three others were treated at the district civil hospital. One person in the vehicle has escaped unhurt. Police said, the accident occurred around 9:30 am, when the lorry hit the tourist vehicle on its side in a sharp curve.
The seven-member Russian team was on its way from Goa to Virupapura Gadde near Hampi. Dharwad rural police circle inspector Ashok rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the residents of the area blocked traffic alleging that problematic alignment of the road was causing accidents repeatedly. The police officers later convinced the protesters to withdraw their stir and vehicular movement was restored.
