Gold haul: Trio released on bail

The three men arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport for carrying 54 kg gold worth Rs 16.5 crore and other gold valuables on February 22, were produced in the court on Sunday evening and released on bail, according to sources in the police department.

According to the official, the trio - Balasubramanya, Ravi Varma R and Iswhar Murthy - will be taken into custody again, after obtaining permission from the court. 

The three men claimed themselves to be sales executives with a jewellery unit in Coimbatore.

According to police, a team comprising an assistant commissioner of police and a sub-inspector questioned the trio and gathered details. 

The Kolkata police had also arrested a man, whom the police claimed, was an associate of the trio. Upon getting information, the Kolkata police interrogated the three and concluded that theirs was a separate case.

The police said more details could not be revealed at present.

“We are trying to find out how such a huge quantity of gold was being transported so easily,” a senior police officer said.

Killed in accident

Three people were killed while three others sustained injuries in separate accidents in Vijayanagar, Ulsoor and Kempegowda International Airport traffic police limits since Saturday.

In the first incident, Uday, 8, a resident of Nrupatunganagar near Nagarabhavi was killed on the spot after he was crushed under the wheels of a goods vehicle on Nagarabhavi Main Road in Govindarajnagar on Saturday night. Uday’s mother Sumithra was rushed to a private hospital as she sustained injuries on her legs, said the police.

According to police, Kamalakar, a businessman, was riding a two-wheeler with his wife Sumithra and Uday as pillion, attend a reception at a wedding hall on Magadi Main Road. He rammed a goods vehicle, which he attempted to overtake. Uday and Sumithra fell down and the rear wheel of the goods vehicle ran over the boy.

The driver of the goods vehicle was taken into custody.

In another accident on Sulibele Main Road, Papanna (50), a resident of Sulibele was killed on the spot after a bike he was riding pillion rammed a road-side tree. The accident occurred when Shiva, Papanna and Munichandra, all workers from Sulibele were returning home from work. 

They stopped near a bar and consumed liquor. Shiva, who was riding the bike, failed to notice a road hump and ploughed on to pavement, before hitting a tree.

All the three were shifted to a nearby hospital where Papanna was declared dead on arrival. Munichandra and Shiva are being treated at Devanahalli government hospital, added the police.

A 20-year-old youth was killed after his two-wheeler sped over a road hump in Amarajyothi Layout on Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as Prakash Singh, a helper at a PG accommodation.

Police said that Singh sustained grievous injuries as he was tossed in the air and fell to ground.

He was taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
