A Dalit groom was allegedly forced to get down from the palanquin he was sitting when his baraat crossed a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district.

The groom was made to walk on foot along with the other members of the wedding procession, said reports.

People behind the incident are said to be members of the upper castes. A complaint has been lodged with the police in this regard against a dozen people and the matter is being investigated.

According to reports, the groom’s guests were to leave by train to Madhya Pradesh for the marriage.

Before departing, the guests,  following a wedding ritual, were making a round of Pahadia village with the groom sitting inside a decorated palki in on Sunday.

As the procession reached midway, some people stopped the guests and asked the groom to get down from the palanquin. They said they would not allow the party to walk through their locality. They also allegedly assaulted a few guests when they objected.

The father of the groom Brish Bhan has lodged a complaint with the police.

The wedding party later left for Madhya Pradesh.

The incident comes close on the heels of assault on a headmaster of a primary school in UP’s Gonda district for allowing a Dalit woman cook midday meal.

The headmaster Mirza Mohammed Umar Baig was not only thrashed but was also held hostage for several hours before being rescued by the police.

Earlier also there have been instances when members of the upper castes asked their children not to eat the midday meal if it had been prepared by Dalits.
