Pradhan committee has limited mandate: M N Singh

Mumbai, Dec 5 (PTI)

The Ram Pradhan Committee, which probed the response by the police to the 26/11 Mumbai attack, should have looked into not only the lapses on the part of the city police but also of other security agencies, former commissioner of police M N Singh said on Saturday.

"The Pradhan committee had a very limited mandate. It was asked to look into just the work of the police. It should have looked into the entire security set-up including the intelligence, navy, coastguard and politicians," Singh said here at a seminar.

Pradhan committee spoke about intelligence reports warning of a possible attack in the city via the coastal line but the committee should have also looked into why the reports remained buried under some files at the Mantralaya, he said. "On November 26 last year, the entire Indian security set-up collapsed and no segment of the set-up can claim that they succeeded, not even the National Security Gaurds (NSG)," Singh said, adding that it was a shame that ten young boys could cripple the entire nation.

Singh also accused the government of not having done anything for the police force. "In the last 60 years, the government has done nothing to prepare or train the police force. Suddenly one day, how can the police be expected to take on the role of a commando force?" Singh questioned, adding while hi-tech machines are being acquired, men should also be trained to use those machines.
