IM men behind bomb planting at Hyderabad's Dilsukhnagar: NIA

Last Updated 03 April 2014, 14:21 IST

NIA has told a court here that top arrested Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives Tehsin Akhtar and Zia-ur-Rehman alias Waqas were actively associated in the ''planning'' and ''planting'' of two IEDs which exploded at Dilsukhnagar in Hyderabad last year, claiming 16 lives.

National Investigation Agency's Hyderabad unit, which had come to the court to seek its permission to arrest and take Tehsin and Waqas in its custody in connection with the case, said both the accused had "personally participated" in various blast cases in India, including the February 21, last year Dilsukhnagar blasts.

It claimed Tehsin and Waqas were "actively associated in conspiracy, planning, assembly of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and the planting of two IED-laden cycles at Dilsukhnagar". The explosions resulted in death of 16 persons and left 131 injured.

NIA said, "Arrest and custodial interrogation leading to strengthening of the already-collected evidence as well as collection of fresh evidence against present accused persons, like test identification parade (TIP), comparison of DNA fingerprint with the already-extracted DNA from the seized material which were recovered from hideouts could facilitate the filing of supplementary charge sheet against them in the near future and early commencement of a comprehensive trial."

Meanwhile, NIA's Delhi unit had also approached the court seeking its permission to formally arrest Tehsin and Waqas in connection with a case of alleged conspiracy of IM to carry out terror acts in the country.

NIA, Delhi told the court that during their probe, roles of both the accused in the conspiracy to carry out terror strikes in the country have emerged and they were "important members" of IM.

It claimed both the accused had personally participated in various blasts across the country and they had "explicit knowledge" about the hideouts of other absconding IM men and their present locations.

However, after a tug of war between NIA and Special Cell of Delhi Police, Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash remanded Tehsin, Waqas and three other suspected IM operatives in the custody of the special cell till April 15.
