Rahul thinks I should contest polls: Priyanka

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said her brother and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi wanted her to contest the Lok Sabha elections, but she decided to stay out of the fray.

She also trashed reports that the Congress high command opposed her wish to fight Narendra Modi in Varanasi.

“My brother (Rahul) has told me many times that he thinks I should contest,” a news channel quoted her as saying. She said her focus for now was on managing the campaigns in Amethi and Raebareli, from where her brother Rahul and mother Sonia are contesting.

“No one in my family would ever stop me from contesting an election. My brother, mother and husband  (Robert Vadra) would wholeheartedly support me if I wanted to contest,” she said while rejecting reports that  she was “very keen” to contest against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Modi in Varanasi, but Congress leadership did not favour it.

Priyanka, however, did not rule out the possibility of her joining active politics in future.  “My decision to not contest is personal. I will change it only when I feel from within that I should,” she said.

The Congress, meanwhile, appealed to the media to respect Priyanka’s privacy and decision, dismissing as “motivated and planted” reports that she wanted to challenge Modi.

“I think Priyanka herself has rejected this contention. After her own clarification on the motivated, nothing more needs to be said,” party spokesman Randeep Surjewala said.
