Adding value to graduation

People Smart Employers look for such graduates who can think and work out-of-the-box, says V B Hiremath

To enhance the value of a  traditional degree like BA, B Sc and B Com students need to add value to their graduating experience and there are ample opportunities to do so rather than merely accumulating more information.

Skills, additional certificate courses makes a candidate different from aspirants without these. Employers seek such kind of graduates for their companies or institutions - those smart enough to think and work out-of-the-box.

Presently colleges try to provide  more exposure to the students. Students have to develop habit of learning more and more. Colleges conduct debate competition, elocution, encourage to participate in seminars, host exhibitions, organise functions where students participation is involved like compering, decorating stage, singing invocation song, proposing a vote of thanks, receiving guests, inviting guests; organising workshops so on and so forth.These are the best opportunities for the students to learn by involving themselves in these activities.This gives participatory experience, experiential learning by which one will gain leadership qualities. involvement results in multiplying your self confidence, self esteem and self development.

Most colleges will be have extra-curricular activities like National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS ) where you me be enrolled as a cadet for NCC or volunteer for NSS. Try to be involved in these activities and learn as much as possible. Appear for B and C certificate examinations of NCC and get through.


Put all your efforts to get selected to participate in Republic Day parade, to attend Talasena camp. Your whole hearted involvement in NSS activities may lead you to take to state level/national participation. Selection as best NSS volunteer and participation in RD parade are the best  opportunities. These will not only help in shaping your personality but give better chance of getting placements.

Update, upgrade

Many colleges also conduct personality development, skill development programmes for a few days. Attend these programmes sincerely. They are conducted by the private agencies. Practice and inculcate these skills and become smart. By soft skills one will be improve one’s communication and interpersonal skill and by technical skill one will be upgrading with technical knowledge. Attending these programmes is not only to have certificates but one has to practice it in day to day life.

Enriching ourself:

Sometimes colleges also have optional certificate courses. One can complete these courses along with their regular graduation. If the institute has three or more certificate courses, choose one course a year and complete successfully. By the time you graduate you will be have at least three certificates representing additional knowledge. Slow learners may choose the certificate course from the subject which they have chosen for  degree course.


If you are advanced learner you may choose the certificate course other than the subject you have chosen for your degree course. This gives additional knowledge in other fields. Some colleges will be having add on courses which are integrated.
First year it will be certificate course,second year it will be diploma and third year it will be advanced diploma. One can take advantage of these courses.
