CBI to question Parakh in coalgate case

Last Updated 16 April 2014, 19:14 IST

The CBI is likely to question former coal secretary P C Parakh, who is named in an FIR along with Kumaramangalam Birla in the coal block allocation scam, as investigations into the alleged irregularities in the allocation to Birla-owned Hindalco progressed.

The agency has started quizzing top executives of Aditya Birla Group and the next logical step, apparently, is to question Parakh, who is in the news for his controversial memoir “Crusader or Conspirator: Coalgate and Other Truths” in which he has raised fingers at the CBI.

CBI officials said it was not proper to link the plans to question Parakh with the release of the book, as they need to do so to conclude the case. However, the agency has not yet taken any decision on summoning Birla. The CBI had, last year, registered a case naming 46-year-old Birla, Parakh and unknown officials of Hindalco and the coal ministry under various sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy and corruption for alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks nine years ago.
