BJP-TDP ties face rough weather

Last Updated 17 April 2014, 20:07 IST

Even as senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu expressed confidence in Bangalore that the saffron party’s alliance with the Telugu Desam would work, the two-week-old bonhomie between the parties is rapidly turning sour.

In an apparent attempt to arm-twist the BJP into total surrender in Seemandhra, TDP candidates are filing nomination papers in constituencies set aside for the BJP.

Despite Andhra party-incharge Prakash Javadekar rushed Thursday evening to Hyderabad to prevent the situation from getting out of hand, an angry Chandrababu Naidu, addressing a campaign rally in Gajapathinagaram in Vizianagaram district, announced that the TDP is snapping ties with the saffron party in Seemandhra while continuing the alliance in Telangana.

Reacting to Naidu’s decision, Javadekar said at the BJP headquarters here that the party is reviewing the essence of Naidu’s decision and will consult party national leadership. “There is absolutely no confusion. All is well. We will go ahead; we have to prepare for Narendra Modi’s public meeting. These are only last minute working ideas. We will come back to you tomorrow, “Javadekar told reporters.

According to the agreement reached by the two parties, the BJP would get 15 Assembly and five Lok Sabha seats in Seemandhra, while the saffron party was allotted 47 Assembly and eight Lok Sabha seats in Telangana.

However the TDP cadre objected to the seat adjustment and openly defied party dictum. “BJP is unable to field strong candidates in Seemandhra assembly segments thereby scuttling the chances of TDP’s Lok Sabha candidates,” Chandrababu Naidu said. Sources confirmed that Naidu was incensed by the apparent breach of promise the BJP had made during zallotment of seats. In Narsapur Lok Sabha constituency, the TDP wanted the BJP to field Raghurama Krishnam Raju, who joined the BJP from the YSR Congress and was Naidu’s personal choice.
