Signs of physical assault

A 19-year-old woman was found lying in an unconscious state near the IIT gate in south Delhi’s Munirka area late on Wednesday night.

There were signs of physical assault on the woman’s body, but police said medical tests have ruled out rape.

Police at Vasant Vihar station lodged a case of kidnapping and causing grievous injuries based on the woman’s “conflicting” statements.

On discovery, she was rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre where her condition is stable.“The girl is still in a hazy state and is not able to give a clear picture of the sequence of events. She said she had come to Delhi from Gujarat with a man, but is not able to remember how she landed on the roads. She is not able to even remotely identify the man,” said a police officer.

The girl was discovered by an auto driver near IIT Gate at about 11:30 pm on Wednesday as he was riding by. He stopped by and found her lying unconscious. He first tried to wake her up, but found injury marks on her body and called police.

“The girl claimed she is the a maulana’s daughter in Gujarat and told us his phone number. But when he was contacted, he denied knowing the girl,” said the officer. She did mention a village in Gujarat and police are trying to check if any missing case has been reported from there.

Police say it is possible that she had eloped with the man that she mentioned about and was later ditched by him. “It is possible that the person who she claims as her father could have disowned her if the eloping story is found true. We will get a clear picture only after she regains consciousness,” the officer added.

Police said they are questioning street vendors in the area who could provide some clues.
