KOA set to revive State Oly Games

Last Updated 18 May 2014, 17:36 IST

The Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) on Sunday announced it would revive the State Olympic Games later this year by conducting it alongside the Dasara Games.

“The State Olympic Games will be revived through Dasara sports. Every year the State Olympic Games will happen,” President of the KOA, K Govindaraj, who was elected unopposed during the body’s Annual General Meeting, said here on Sunday.

K Anantharaju was re-elected Secretary-General after defeating K Nanda Kumar, the Karnataka Volleyball Association secretary, by 43 votes to 15. This was the only post to which elections were held.

Vice-presidents R Venkatesh and D Chandrahasa Rai and Joint Secretary SR Shivanand are the new names in the list of the office-bearers announced after the AGM, monitored by IOA observer Abdul Rehman.

Asked about the revival of the State Olympic Games, Govindaraj said: “I personally felt that the Dasara Games had become more of a cultural show and juniors and school-children were the only ones participating. We wanted to make it a lot more competitive and that’s the reason we will have the State Olympic Games during Dasara at Mysore.”

The Games will then be taken to other districts. It was last held in Mandya and Mysore in 2007-08.

List of elected office bearers for the years 2014-18: President: K Govindaraj; Vice-presidents: CMDE JP Carneiro IN, Dr Manje Gowda, M Mohanraj, R Venkatesh, D Chandrahasa Rai, PM Somashekara; Secretary General: Anantharaju; Joint Secretary: R Prakash, SR Shivanand; Treasurer: Rajesh N Jagdale; Executive Committee Members: Karnataka Badminton Association, Karnataka Wrestling Association, Karnataka Swimming Association, Karnataka Taekwondo Association, Karnataka Volleyball Association, Karnataka Amateur Cycling Association, Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association.
