Shiradi Ghat road work to begin soon

The Union government has approved two project proposals to build concrete roads on the vexed Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway – 48 at a cost of Rs 154 crore and the work will commence soon, PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa said on Monday.

Replying to V Sunil Kumar of the BJP on the bad state of NH-48 in the Assembly, he said of the two projects one costs Rs 69.90 crore covering about 14 km and another Rs 85.28 crore covering about 13 km.

Tender has been awarded to Ocean Construction India Pvt Ltd, Mangalore for the first one. The second one will be implemented under engineering, procurement and construction contract, he added.

This stretch of NH-48 may have to be closed for about two months for project implementation.

The government will soon convene a meeting of Deputy Commissioners of Hassan and Dakshina Kannada districts to find an alternative road, he added.

JD(S) MLA B B Ningaiah said alternative roads can be developed between Sisila and Birapura villages near Mudigere.

Then the PWD minister said 20-km stretch of road passing through Sisila belongs to the local Zilla Panchayat and another 18 km of road passing through Birapura is in forest area.

The government will, however, examine the possibility of developing them, he added.
