A special court for CBI cases on Wednesday awarded seven-year jail term for a former scientist with the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) for simultaneously working in two government establishments and drawing salaries from both the organisations.

The convict I P Venkataramanappa had worked as a scientist at the NAL and also as an inspector with the Karnataka State Weights and Measures Department, at the same time.

The dual employment fraud came to light when the CBI raided Venkataramanappa’s house on Whitefield Road in May 2003.

The CBI found that he was an employee with the NAL since 1983 and was also an employee with the Weights and Measures Department in Haveri.

He used to sign the attendance register at the Weights and Measures Department in Haveri once in a week. The fraud was undetected for 20 years between 1983 and 2003.

The CBI, after gathering all the documents, including salary details, filed a charge sheet against Venkataramanappa for cheating.

The special court judge G S Sangreshi convicted him under Section 420 of IPC and Section 5 (1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act and awarded him seven years’ imprisonment under each section. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs two lakh on the convicted.
