JOIN USA 28-year-old constable attached to the Rajagopala Nagar police station suffered serious head injuries while he was chasing a thief near Andrahalli in the early hours of Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 3.45 am when Holeyappa Meti, a native of Koppal and a resident of Sunkadkatte, was on night duty patrolling.
Meti and his colleague Prasanna were at Bharath Private Limited, a factory manufacturing iron equipments, to sign a register as part of their usual routine.
While signing the register, Meti heard some noise inside the factory and when he went inside to check, he saw a person trying to make away with some materials. He immediately started chasing the thief but the thief scaled on to the roof to escape.
Meti too scaled on to the roof to catch the suspect, but the moment he stepped on the roof, the asbestos sheet gave away and Meti fell down, police added. He fell down from a height of 15 to 20 feet and suffered grievous head injuries.
Shifted to hospital
Prasanna noticed Meti falling down and alerted the other staff in the police station who rushed him to the hospital, police added.
Doctors informed that Meti had suffered fracture of the leg and needs to be operated upon immediately.
Sandip Patil, DCP (North), who visited the constable at the hospital, said that Meti was operated in the morning.
“He is under observation for 48-hours. We are in constant touch with doctors to get updates about his condition,” Patil added.
Recently married
Meti was married just a few months ago, Shivaraj, Meti’s father-in-law told Deccan Herald. “It was unfortunate for him to fall from such a height, but the family is proud because he put his life at stake for the sake of duty,” Shivaraj said.
The police said that no case has been registered. Police are ascertaining whether the factory was guarded by a watchman and whether there were any CCTV cameras installed.
