When Yelahanka peddled the cycling message

The Allalasandra lake in Yelahanka, where the ‘Cycle Day’ event was organised, was bustling with activity on Sunday. Scores of enthusiastic cyclists and volunteers from different parts of the City took part.

Around 2,500 cyclists pedalled in and around Yelahanka New Town, covering main roads and the Allalasandra lake pathway.

They covered more than five km. The participants were mainly from areas such as Judicial Layout, Sanjaynagar, Hebbal and RT Nagar.

The event was held by Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), Urban Development Department and Bangalore Coalition for Open Streets (BCOS), in partnership with Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA).

Noble cause

“Through this event, we want to popularise cycling within Yelahanka and build awareness on sustainable transport modes such as cycling and walking,” said Jagadish Giri, joint secretary of YUVA.

To create awareness about cycling and its benefits, a skit was presented by schoolchildren.  
Yelahanka legislator S R Vishwanath and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials planted saplings on the banks of the lake.

Vishwanath told Deccan Herald that there is a proposal to set up cycling tracks on three to four wide roads in his constituency, with financial assistance from the Directorate of Urban Land Transport.
