Tracing the rhythm of light

ABSTRACT ART

Colours thrown in on the canvas appear abstract but take different shapes when looked at carefully.

“When I paint, my connection with the inner self is as if I am in meditation. I require deep silence to take the action,” says Eva Maria Pecheno as one absorbs her artworks displayed at the exhibition ‘Flow in the Light’.

An art show based on the theme of spirituality in the form of 26 paintings by Pecheno, depicts the artist’s indulgence in spiritual developments. Though it is difficult to relate a combination of purple, green and black on canvas with a soul in search of peace or a green and blue with a toad holding a flower, it all depends on the viewer’s imagination!

Take for instance, the untitled painting bordered in green colour. To Metrolife, it appears like a cute little animated creature amazed at the beauty of flowers in a garden. Also, the painting with a dominant use of different shades of green and blue with brown at the bottom, seems to be a portrayal of the sea life with fishes and flowers living in harmony.
But the Spanish artist, however, prefers to follow only the feeling which can be in contradiction with the mind at the beginning. She talks about and state of the mind trying to control the matter – paintbrush, colours and effects. All of which is visible in her artworks.

A PhD in Fine Art from the University of Barcelona, Pecheno shares that since her father is a painter, “I have been with the paintbrushes and paintings since I was a child. I started painting when I was 18-years-old and never stopped after that. And I am proud of it, because I could see the tremendous strength and confidence you get with the life experiences and art techniques.”

Pecheno flows with the present time and feeling and believes that the viewers will identify themselves with the images.

“They can resonate to them, because these paintings are part of the original universal energies of love and truth,” she says as one wracks one’s brain to figure out and draw a deep meaning from the black patch on a yellow backdrop or blue horizontal lines on white. The exhibited paintings do kindle the thoughts of an imaginary inner world, but the same cannot be said for all of them.

The exhibition is on display at Gallerie Alternatives, DT Mega Mall, Gurgaon till July 23.
