Abdul Nasser Maudany, one of the accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts and founder-chairman of Kerala-based People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was released from the Central Prison, Bangalore, on Monday night, three days after the Supreme Court granted him one-month bail on health grounds.

As the prison authorities released him around 7.45 pm, a large crowd, including his family members, friends, relatives, supporters and well-wishers, received him. He was driven away to Soukya International Holistic Health Centre in Samethanahalli near Whitefield.

“I will fully abide by the Supreme Court’s order as I have the highest respect for the law of the land. The court has directed the police to carry out additional investigation to ascertain my role in the conspiracy. I am fully confident of getting a clean chit as I am innocent,” Maudany told reporters before he left for the hospital. On July 11, the Supreme Court ordered his release for a month, putting conditions that he should not leave Bangalore, not contact witnesses, not try to tamper with evidence or influence the investigation. The court also directed the State government to strictly monitor his every movement and take the required measures to ensure that he did not get in touch with witnesses in the case, including putting him under surveillance.

Maudany’s ailments

Maudany, 49, who is suffering from insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, cervical spondylitis, coronary artery disease, hypertension, neurological bladder, dyslipidemia, allergic rhinitis and intervertebral disc prolapse, would undergo treatment for a month.

He was at Soukya Hospital for the first time in June-July 2011 for 28 days on the order of the Supreme Court. He was hospitalised at the same place for the second time on January 7, 2013, before being discharged on February 21, 2013, as per a High Court order.

A team of Bangalore City police led by the then Joint Commissioner (Crime) Alok Kumar had arrested Maudany from his orphanage-cum-madrasa complex at Anwarassery in Kollam district of Kerala on August 17, 2010. In the serial blasts, a woman identified as Pushpa was killed while more than 15 people were injured.
