Gowda, Jyothi for CWG

Discus thrower Vikas Gowda and sprinter H M Jyothi feature in the Indian athletics team for the Commonwealth Games, starting next week.

Vikas is the silver medallist at the last Commonwealth Games in New Delhi while Canara Bank employee Jyothi was part of the 4x100 relay team that won the bronze.

High jumper Sahana Kumari, quartermiler M R Poovamma and Ashwini Akkunji (4x400M relay) are the other Karnataka athletes in the team.

The Athletics Federation of India had decided not to send the men’s 4x100 relay team after their poor performance in the trials while Arpinder Singh figures as the lone triple jumper after Renjith Maheswary failed to impress in the trials.

Meanwhile, Dutee Chand was included in 4x100 relay squad despite a cloud over her gender.The athletics squad: Men: Siddanth Thingalaya (110m hurdles), Arpinder Singh (triple jump), Om Prakash (Shot put), Vikas Gowda (discus throw), Devinder Singh, Ravinder Singh, Vipin Kasana (javelin), Kamalpreet Singh, Chandrodya Narayan Singh (hammer throw), Arokia Rajiv, Kunhumuhammed, Sachin Roby, Lalit Mathur, Jithu Baby, Jibin S (4x400M relay).

Women: Sahana Kumari (high jump); Mayookha Johny (long jump); Seema Punia, Krishna Poonia (discus throw), Annu Rani (javelin throw); Saradha Narayan, H M Jyothi, Srabani Nanda, Asha Roy, Santhini V, Merlin Joseph, Dutee Chand (4x100M relay), M R Poovamma, Tintu Luka, Debas­hree Majumdar, Ratandeep Kaur, Anilda Thomas, Ashwini Akkunji (4x400M relay).
